Sonia's story

Sonia's life was transformed after she received a heart valve transplant at the age of 17.

13 December 2019
Sonia was born with a congenital heart defect and grew up knowing she would need a heart valve transplant at some point.

She says: “When I was about 14 things started to become really noticeable. I couldn’t walk across a street or speak to someone without being breathless.

“Walking over a road would feel like a marathon.

“I was 17 when I had my heart valve transplant.

“I know it’s a cliché, but it is like having a new lease of life after transplant. You become so accustomed to being unwell and unable to do everyday activities, so being able to do all the things I loved doing before, such as tap dancing, was amazing.

I tap-danced for 12 years before my op and had to give up due to illness. I’m dancing again now and five months after my transplant I ran a 10k race!

The law around organ donation in England has changed to help more people pass on more organs to save and improve more lives like Sonia's.

You still have a choice if you want to be an organ donor when you die.

Whatever you decide, make sure you let your family and friends know.
