Organ donation campaigns

Black History Month

Organ donation law is changing. Pass it on.

Next year, the law around organ donation is changing in England and Scotland. From spring 2020 in England and autumn 2020 in Scotland, all adults will be considered as having agreed to donate their own organs when they die unless they record a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups. This system was introduced in Wales in 2015.

In the lead up to the change in law, NHS Blood and Transplant is urging families across England to talk about their organ donation decision, with the campaign message ‘Pass it on’.

Why do we campaign?

To promote public awareness about organ donation and transplantation.

To encourage people to join the NHS Organ Donor Register.

To encourage people to share their donation decision with their family and friends.

Many people don’t realise that their family’s support is needed for organ donation to go ahead, and fewer than half of families agree to donation going ahead if they are unaware of their loved one’s decision to be a donor.

In the UK

  • Around 6,000 people across the UK are waiting for an organ transplant
  • Only around 6,000 people each year die in circumstances where they can donate their organs
  • Every day across the UK, someone dies waiting for a transplant

Personal stories make a difference

We know that personal stories about organ donation or transplantation are really powerful. Seeing them on the TV, in newspapers or online can encourage others to join the NHS Organ Donor Register or trigger people to talk about organ donation.
