The Organ Donor Card
An organ donor card is a great way to show you’re committed to saving lives. You can carry your card in your purse or wallet as a symbol of your decision to help others.
Remember that even if you have recorded your decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register, your family will always be involved in organ donation, and they could override your decision if they don’t know what you want. So, talk to your family and leave them certain.
Many people find their donor card is a good way to prompt them into talking about their decision with their loved ones. You could put it somewhere prominent in your home. For example, on the fridge as a daily reminder to your family that you’re signed up as an organ donor.
People also show their support for organ donation by sharing pictures of themselves proudly holding their card on social media. It’s a quick and easy way to let others know that you want to donate your organs, while helping to spread the word about the importance of organ donation.
We send a new donor card to everyone who wants to donate, when they register for the first time, however you can download posters, screen savers and wallpapers if you would prefer a digital version.
You don’t need to have your donor card on you at all times, the decision you have recorded on the NHS Organ Donor Register will be checked, and your family approached, if the time comes that you are able to be an organ donor.
Faith and belief donor cards
You can also download a donor card that reflects your faith or belief system. Faith specific donor cards can be used to prompt a conversation with those who matter to you.
Text or Whatsapp friends and family to let them know you want to be an organ donor, and show your support for organ donation.
