How is organ donation shown in The Pitt?

The series features a storyline which sees a family struggle to accept the death of their son, Nick, and follows their journey as they learn he had registered as an organ donor. Initially unsure, the family speak with their pastor before deciding to honour Nick's wishes and agree to donation. One particularly moving scene shows the medical teams line up for an 'honour walk', recognising the incredible decision the family has made and the gift that Nick is giving to others.

A US study has found that 26.9% of viewers polled said that the show made them more likely to seek out information on organ donation.

In the UK, 54% of the population are yet to register an organ donation decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register and the waiting list for an organ transplant is at its highest ever, with over 8,300 people currently waiting.

In 2025, 60% of deceased organ donors in the UK were registered to donate, with donations proceeding around 90% of the time if a person has shared their wishes to donate. When there is no registered decision, donation will go ahead around 50% of the time.

Anthony Clarkson, Director of Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant, says:

“We're delighted to collaborate with Noah and The Pitt, to bring the organ donation conversation to the forefront of people’s minds through both this video and the show. Early reports illustrate that the show did a fantastic job at encouraging people to think about what their decisions might be and we hope that it will have a similar effect here in the UK.

"The waiting list for a transplant is at its highest ever level, with over 8,300 people waiting for that life-saving organ that they need. The best way that we can all help to try to bring this number down – and help as many people as possible – is by registering our decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register. As Noah says in his video, it takes just two minutes to do, can save up to 9 lives and is the best thing you will do today."
