Primrose, on the kidney transplant waiting list
Primrose has recently been added to the kidney transplant waiting list.
She was born with polycystic kidney disease, a largely hereditary condition, and her mother and sister have already received kidney transplants.
Primrose says: “I have known for 21 years that I will have kidney failure. The long and short of it is that I need a kidney.”
Her mother was on dialysis for 13-and-a-half years and her sister spent nine years on dialysis before receiving transplants.
The lengthy wait is in part due to a lack of organ donors from the black community.
Primrose says: “You’re at a disadvantage because there aren’t enough kidneys to match people of colour.”
“In our community we don’t talk about organ donation. It’s taboo. We can’t even embrace the conversation.”
