To mark the centenary of the world's first successful cornea transplant, ten famous photographers captured on film the favourite sights of cornea recipients and those still waiting for one.
100 years of the gift of sight!
7 December 2005 marked the 100th anniversary of the first successful cornea transplant and UKT celebrated with an awareness-raising campaign.
Cornea transplantation is one of medicine’s big success stories. And for patients, it’s little short of a miracle – a one-hour operation that can restore that most precious of senses, our sight.
It’s one of the most commonly performed transplant operations and with modern surgical techniques and drugs the success rate is very good.
Every year in the UK cornea transplantation helps more than 2,000 blind and partially-sighted people.
But the shortage of donated corneas means that many more could be given the opportunity to see again, if there were more donors.
