Newham Council to lead new initiative to promote blood and organ donation amongst residents 

On Wednesday 14 December, the London Borough of Newham will become the first council to sign a formal partnership agreement with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) aimed at increasing organ and blood donation rates among residents. Building on the support already provided by other councils, the two year agreement will allow efforts to be sustained and momentum to be maintained in awareness-raising efforts.

Rise in organ transplant numbers 

The UK has seen the highest number of organ transplants in six years. Last year (1 April 2002 to 31 March 2003) 2,777 patients had their lives saved or dramatically improved through the generosity of 1,164 donors. A health awareness and fun day to promote organ donation within the black community will be held in South London later this month. The event will be held in Peckham Square, Melon Road, Peckham, SE15, on 22 August to raise awareness of the need for more organ donors within black communities. The event takes place between 11:00 and 16:00. Black people are three times more likely as the general population to develop kidney failure and need a kidney transplant.
